The Israeli public struggles with many social problems that threaten its strength and stability. During the last few years, there has been an alarming increase of youth criminality, violence in schools and in the family, emotional and physical child abuse and negligence, alcohol and drug addiction, etc. In addition to all these, there has been a sharp rise in the divorce rate, that demonstrates problematic marriage-foundations.
Many experts believe that the disintegration of society and the fragile social balance of today's world, stems from the fact that the family union is collapsing and many marriages go through severe crises. In other words, a healthy and strong society is built upon the foundations of healthy and strong family relations. The only way to achieve personal growth and social reconstruction and healing, is through functional and normal family relations.
A family that is built upon a supportive atmosphere is a family that is tuned in to the needs of its children's physical and emotional needs, and meets those needs. Children who grow up in such families will enjoy a normal development. However, children who are deprived of security and support in the family, will develop abnormal behavior patterns and hindered personal growth.
Though a positive, secure atmosphere in the family is of utmost importance for creating a healthy and balanced society, two major issues that might play a role in the disintegration of society cannot be overlooked:
1. The academic institutions do not emphasize enough topics related to family relations and marriage. The formal curriculum of psychology and social work do not give enough attention to this field, and the training of professional marriage consultants is usually done in extracurricular courses, after the formal education has already been completed.
2. Despite the efforts of the authorities, marriage consultation is still inaccessible to many couples in the need of assistance, advice and treatment. Social workers are forced to take on an impossible amount of cases, which leads to the collapsing of the system. Understandably, many cases go unattended and even cases that are referred to, do not get adequate attention. Under the current circumstances, there is no way
to introduce preventive treatment, although all professionals in the field agree that this is of utmost importance.
The Israeli Institute for Marriage and Family Studies – was founded to attack these problems, by establishing programs for professional marriage consultants and family relations counselors.
